STRATEGY
Video Poker Strategy
By Mark Pilarski, Deal Me In

Dear Mark,

My favorite video poker game is Double Bonus Poker. I love the return I get when a four-of-a-kind appears. My question is, what are the mathematical chances of my getting the different types of four-of-a-kinds. Sheila C. Reno, NV

I, like you, Sheila, am a big fan of the Double Bonus Poker machines, because with perfect play, the payback on a full-pay machine is 100.1%. (Note: A full-pay machine, also known as 10-7, is what the machine pays you with one coin inserted for a full house, 10 and a flush, 7). As for the winning frequency of a four-of-a-kind, I decided to list the complete table below.

Royal Flush ...1/48,000
Straight Flush...1/8,800
Four Aces ...1/5,000
Four 2-3-4's ...1/1,900
Four 5-K's ...1/600
Full House ...1/90
Flush ...1/70
Straight ...1/70
Three of a Kind ...1/14
Two Pair ...1/8
Pair of Jacks ...1/5

Foxwoods
Serious About Food
By Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter

Foxwoods Resort Casino recently hired two new chefs to add a distinction that takes the appeal of the world's largest casino far beyond slots and entertainment. Over the summer, Foxwoods hired Aron M. Lesko as Executive Pastry Chef and Heiko C. Bendixen, one of America's 54 certified master chefs, as Director of Food Services in the Food & Beverage Department. Both Chef Aron and Chef Heiko are at the top of their professions and highly respected by their peers. Chef Aron's dessert style has a contemporary outlook with an abstract infusion. All are based on traditional renditions.

Chef Heiko is responsible for culinary services and stewarding at Foxwoods. He will be closely involved with the opening of Foxwoods' newest restaurant, part of a new high-end casino complex opening in December on the 24th and 25th floors of the Grand Pequot Tower.

TRIP REPORT
Gold Coast, Las Vegas

During a quick weekend trip to Vegas from Philly, I stayed at the Gold Coast. I wanted the Rio but it wasn't available due to big clothing convention in town. The Gold Coast rooms are very basic but comfortable. I liked the window in the bathroom. Unlike the bigger hotels, Gold Coast has a pleasant, inexpensive coffee shop. We had breakfast there everyday and the wait staff was nice, too! We ate at their upper-end restaurant but it was mediocre. Skip it and try a nicer casino's steakhouse.

The casino is dark and long with a slight odor but I won on video poker so I didn't mind. I signed up for the Club comp card and they gave me a nice desk clock. They have a wide variety of machines including several video kenos. The next time I need an off-strip hotel I will return to the Gold Coast. They have convenient shuttles to the strip every hour so I made it to the Bellagio water show with no problem. By the way, if you haven't seen the Rio flying stage show, stop by and check it out. It is very fancy and you can continue to gamble while it floats above you. -D. Daley

Last week, we published readers' remarks on Las Vegas buffets. Here's someone who's not so keen on The Rio

Just returned from Vegas. I'd heard so much about the food at the Rio so I took a cab which charged me ten dollars and let me tell you that the food was terrible! And as one of your readers mentioned, it is highly over rated. Some of the sections were roped off so that you could not get to the food. They had a very poor selections of meats, fruits, and pastry. What you did get was poorly cooked and the service was terrible. Never again and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Hope you pass on this information. I'd hate to have others waste their time by going there. -S.

Send your trip reports to . If we publish your report you'll receive a certificate for 2 nights free accommodation redeemable at a number of U.S. destinations. Some blackout periods and other restrictions apply, but it's free!
