El Rancho Goes Boom

The 52 year old El Rancho casino in Las Vegas was imploded on Tuesday, October 3 so that it wouldn't spoil the views from the luxury condos going up next door. How much for a condo with a view? The developer paid $45 million for blowing up El Rancho.

El Rancho, abandoned and boarded up for the past 8 years, started life as The Thunderbird. Steve Cutler, of Casino Legends Hall of Fame, called the former Thunderbird one of Sin City's largest and swankiest resorts when it opened. In its heyday, Thunderbird's oyster bar was a favorite hangout with the Rat Pack. A farewell party took place in the nearby Riviera Hotel.

What Casinos Offer the Best Payouts?
By Max Drayman, WINNERonline

Which casinos offer the best payouts on the Net? We checked around and found the answer. For August 2000, Camelot Casino came in on top at 99.67%. Metro Casino and Five Star Casino were second and third with 98.97% and 98.26% respectively. All three casinos are Boss Media licencees.

Needless to say, it's one thing for a casino to come up with a number and claim that's what their payouts are. It is quite another for them to submit their data logs to a major accounting firm and allow the auditor to derive their own results.

In preparing this survey, only casinos offering audited figures were considered. As it happens PricewaterhouseCoopers is by far the most active firm in this area. All figures are from published August 2000 reports.

More On the Binion Trial
By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

Four more people were charged Thursday in the finale of the spectacular murder trial of gambling tycoon Ted Binion. They all pleaded no contest to their charges which means they aren't required to admit their guilt but they do acknowledge that prosecutors have enough evidence against them so that a jury could find them guilty at trial.

David Mattsen and Michael Milot were charged with conspiracy to commit grand larceny for helping convicted murderer Rick Tabish attempt to dig up Binion's buried silver treasure. John Joseph and Steve Wadkins were sentenced with conspiracy to commit extortion for their roles in plotting to steal the buried silver. None of the four's charges connect them to Binion's murder.

The murderers, by the way, are planning to appeal their sentences...again. Rick Tabish and Sandy Murphy, who are serving life sentences, won't see parole for at least 20 years. The four henchman meantime must perform 200 hours of community service or face a $2000 fine.

Find Comps at Playsys
By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

A new website devoted to finding casino comps for players, launched Wednesday, October 4. Playsys.com says it has deals with dozens of casinos to provide the website with the latest information on their comps, packages and freebies. Some of the participating casinos are Venetian, Stratosphere, Stardust and Tropicana in Las Vegas. And Playsis roams the world for you. Golden Nugget and Les Ambassadeurs Club in London have signed on as well as casinos in South Africa, Slovenia, Australia, Malta, Italy, Greece, Hungary and Romania.

Extravagant comps like plane tickets, luxury suites and epicurean delights have long been used by casinos to woo high rollers to play in their casinos. But the site isn't just for the high rollers. There's information for the average gambler who spends 20 bucks a hand at blackjack. Go to playsys.com

10 Ways to Lose Money Online!
By Max Drayman, WINNERonline

Got a big inheritance that's burning a hole in your pocket? Feeling embarrassed over your big jackpot win at Get Rich Here Casino? Or maybe you're just a shocking good thief and it's time to unload some of your hoarded wealth. Have we got the answer for you: 10 ways to lose it online, fast!

Here's my fav: Sic Bo. It's a three-dice game similar to the very appropriately named Grand Hazard. Either way the game is a minefield of lousy bets. Like to give the house a 47.2% advantage? Then try the "totals" bet of 5 or 16. How about a specific pair at 33.3% to the house? The only halfways decent odds are "Small" or "Big" at a house edge of 2.7% but you'll have to look carefully to find that bet.

Foxwoods
New Luxury Casino Under Construction
By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

Foxwoods is building their most luxurious, intimate and exclusive casino on the top of the Grand Pequot Tower in their Foxwoods complex. "Our newest addition will be the jewel in the crown of Foxwoods," said Bill Sherlock, President and CEO. "Every detail in this new casino will reflect our commitment to offer the best experience guests can find, and our determination to exceed their expectations." The new luxury casino will have 10 gaming tables, a 2-table private salon for discreet gaming, a cocktail bar for 24 and a fusion cuisine restaurant for 65. The casino and restaurant will offer spectacular views from the 360 degree windows. The new as yet unnamed casino will open by the end of the year.

Speaking of Foxwoods, they've lined up a diverse range of talent for their October schedule. John Michael Montgomery and Billy Gilman kick-off October at the Fox Theater. Both have hit songs in country's top ten. Crooners Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett also make appearances. And to get people in the mood for Halloween, Alice Cooper comes to the Fox Theater for one show at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 30. For tickets and information, contact the Foxwoods Box Office at 800-200-2882

TRIP REPORT
The Grand Hotel and Casino, Tunica, Mississippi

If you want to get out of the fast lane and enjoy southern hospitality, pleasant atmosphere and the chance to hit that big jackpot, I have found the place. The Grand Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.

I'm a novice blackjack player and my mother a slot machine player. This is our 3rd trip in 4 months. They have exciting, new-to-me blackjack games and side bets. I am not sure of all the names but surely you will find your favorite. If you are like me, you enjoy personable dealers and not the robot ones. At The Grand Hotel, you get the feeling that every employee loves their job or takes acting classes on the side.

Although the hotel has famous entertainers from time to time, it is not Las Vegas or close. A Friday or Saturday may have a lounge live music group. Sunday through Thursday, with the exception at Balley's and their comedy club, forget any music.

You're probably asking what did they pay me to write this or do I work for them. The answer is a simple no. I just would like people to visit The Grand Hotel. Next trip we are hoping to win some money. Now that's what I would call a trip! -- M Chenoweth and V Kirk

Send your trip reports to . If we publish your report you'll receive a certificate for 2 nights free accommodation redeemable at a number of U.S. destinations. Some blackout periods and other restrictions apply, but it's free!
