COMPS Don't Play for Comps! By Spearmaster, http://www.got2bet.com One of the wonderful benefits of going to Vegas on a gambling trip is the special deals offered to you by the casinos. Known as complimentaries, or "comps", the object is to entice you to gamble more money at the tables, and hopefully come back time and time again. Complimentaries can take many forms - whether it's the free alcohol that is served throughout the casino, cashback incentives, free room nights, meals or show tickets, and sometimes even free airfare - comps are enough justification for gamblers to take a trip to Vegas, rather than perhaps a trip to Hawaii, the Bahamas or some other exotic destination. On top of that, it's generally a lot more exciting than sitting on a beach somewhere sipping a margarita. But many gambling experts tell you to avoid playing for comps - and for good reason - often the value of the comps are not worth the amount of risk you take at the tables or the slots. BACCARAT Baccaratmania Hits The Strip By Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter Baccarat is seeing a surge in popularity as high rollers flock to the prestigious card game. One reason for the renewed popularity of baccarat is the improving Asian economy which has lead to more Asian high rollers visiting casinos. It's not unheard of for baccarat players to have $1 million-plus credit limits, wagering hundreds of thousands of dollars per hand. Casinos reward these high rollers with lavish comps to keep them at the table. Want to learn to play baccarat? It's easy. Click here for the rules. |
VIDEO POKER Tightening the Machine By Mark Pilarski, http://www.dealmein.org Dear Mark, On the weekends, do casinos make adjustments on their video poker machines to make more money? Sam K. Do you mean do casinos take a screwdriver to their slots on the weekends to tighten them up? No way. It is not cost effective for the casino to continually alter the payouts on their machines. To alter the percentage return in their favor on a video game, the casino must, by law, make a hardware change. You do this by swapping out an internal component, the ROM portion of the microprocessor chip. ROM, or read only memory, is a chip the slot manufacturer provides the casino. This is the chip that tells the video poker machine to pay 9 coins for a full house, 6 coins for a flush. Additionally, they would have to physically change the glass payout schedule on their machines. What you could see is a seasonal wholesale change to improve their theoretical hold by making all 9/6 machines to 8/5 bandits. By changing to all 8/5 machines, the house holds an additional 3% edge on each and every machine. Get more expert tips from Mark at http://www.dealmein.org |

TRIP REPORT Video Poker Battle at Isle of Capri It was July 15th in Vicksburg, Ms. at my favorite place, the Isle of Capri and I was playing this one nickle progressive. I played it hard like it has never been played before. For one solid hour we did battle. Then I had pre-registered Farraday's reservations, so I turned it loose. I was up $40 bucks on it and I sold my winnings to a man who wanted to play my machine so he wouldn't have to stand in line for change 'cause the bill changer was broken. When I returned, a friend who was playing next to me said that my machine took every nickle back that I sold that man and it was vacanct so I said, ok -- it's me and you again. I diddled a bit, but I surely knew that it was being stubborn, yes; even with me. A quick ten bucks was swallowed up like the ocean did the Titanic or The Perfect Storm got those fellas. So, I let it be so it could think about what it was going to do next. I let it contemplate it's next move. I went off, but kept it in eye-balls range. Yes, indeed, there were serious mind games going on. After 2 hours and several hopper fillings later on other machines, I walked over to it, smiled, and with all it's glory, there it was. Vacant and wide open as well as it pleases. I sat down! Wiped the sweat off my brow and said, ok -- let's get it on! I dropped 10 nickles -- the max! It gave me 4 cards hearts to the Royal minus the ACE. Now I have battled this machines for over 5 hours and look at this, it's looking all simple. I said here's the Royal right here. In a flash of lightening, I made my draw. Bing, bang, boom -- the bells went off and I was up several hundred to the good. It was the first time I had ever hit a Royal on first draw before. I've done it on 5 several times, but never one. So, I proceeded to go hit a few hundred more on my favorite slots, and went to the hotel and drifted off with a smile on my face. -- DanDaMan |
