Aladdin's $10 Million Chip

A casino chip approved for use at the new $1 billion Aladdin Resort & Casino in Las Vegas will carry a face value of $10 million when the hotel opens on Aug. 17, according to a Reuters news story. It's believed to be the highest valued chip in gambling history.

"[The chip] is a big black gaming plaque, six or seven inches long by four inches wide," said Aladdin President Bill Timmins. "We'll have just one. It's nothing really fancy -- a rectangular piece of plastic about the size of an eight-by-five photograph. It does say $10 million on it. The location of the casino and city will also be on it."

POKER
Learn to Play Texas Hold'em
By Max Drayman, http://www.winneronline.com

Texas Hold'Em is the darling of pro Poker players, spectators, and the media. It's an aggressive, flashy, intense and unpredictable game that gets the dollars on the table and changing hands like no other contemporary form of Poker. All that and it looks deceptively simple to play.

The old hard-nut players may prefer 7-Card Stud, but everyone else is in love with Hold'Em. It's no coincidence that Hold'Em is the game that players at the World Series of Poker play to determine who takes home $1,000,000 and the champion's custom 14-karat gold bracelet.

SLOTS
When To Walk Away From a Cold Machine
By Mark Pilarski, http://www.dealmein.org

Dear Mark: Is there any set time that you should walk away from a cold machine? I ask because often I spend far too much time on a slot machine, not even knowing how much I've spent. Joyce G. Santa Barbara, CA

If you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump out instantly. Yet, if you were to place it in a pot of cool water and slowly raise the temperature to the boiling point, the frog will unsuspectingly meet its fatal demise. As the metaphor suggests, we human frogs can cook ourselves to death in a casino, hanging around slot machines and table games far too long, waiting for our luck to turn.

I am asking you to jump out of the pot NOT because a machine is cold. I have explained in past columns that each spin on a slot machine is an independent event based on the random number generator (RGN). I am asking you to jump out because I want you to develop discipline and fiscal awareness of your bankroll when you play. After you lose a certain percentage of your playing capital, like five percent, or five pulls with no return, learn to walk away. That way, Joyce, you will be smarter than the frog.

ONLINE
The Key to Winning
By Spearmaster, http://www.got2bet.com

The key to winning when you gamble is discipline. This is no different in Vegas than it is online -- you must know when to quit or walk away. However, disciplining yourself while in Vegas is a bit more difficult, considering you are only there for a few days -- many people treat the experience as entertainment, and don't mind too much whether they win or lose just so long as the amount lost is moderate.

SPORTS
Jackson Backs Out of Casino
By Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter

Last week I told you about the new Reggie Jackson Online Casino at http://www.reggiejacksoncasino.com endorsed by Mr. October himself. Since then Jackson has decided to cut all ties to the casino.

Jackson was angered by the unauthorized use of his name in connection with sports betting offered via a link from the site. Baseball has strict antigambling rules (just ask Pete Rose) and Jackson wants to remain in baseball's good books.

Jackson's original agreement permitted him to withdraw his name if baseball was troubled by the association.

TRIP REPORT
Best Craps on the Strip

Last week I asked our readers to send in trip reports on their recent gambling holidays and, as usual, our readers responded like champions. I'll publish a number of these reports over the next few issues. I hope you'll find them both useful and entertaining. -- Steve

"I just came back from Vegas for the third time this year with my father. We are in an endless search for the perfect craps table. The best we found so far is at Casino Royale -- a dinky place on the Strip in between Venetian and Harrahs that offers 100X odds with a two dollar minimum. It's a really funny place. I called out 'dollar tip' for the dealer to be put on what he chooses and the stickman says, 'dollar on whatever hits'. I laughed, but then I rolled an eleven and he calls out 'eleven hit for the dealer, thank you sir.' What a place!!" JG
