TOP NEWS $124 Million in Bellagio Artwork Sold MGM Grand announced the sale of 11 paintings from the collection at the former Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art for a total sales price of approximately $124 million. Three of the paintings were sold to Steve Wynn, former Chairman of Mirage Resorts, which was acquired last week by MGM Grand. Jim Murren, President of MGM Grand said: "We have temporarily closed The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. We intend to reopen it after we have developed an exhibition schedule in cooperation with major museums and art institutions." MGM Grand intends to retain the collection which is on display in its two five star restaurants, Picasso at Bellagio and Renoir at The Mirage. |
SLOTS Family Feud Slots Coming to MGM By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter Guests of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas will soon get their first taste of the new Family Feud Slots, based on the popular game show. When players hit the designated bonus jackpot, a question is randomly selected from the game's database of over 1,000 questions. The top answers are "on the board" and players' guesses appear on a rotating placard. Hitting the "Answer" plunger on the machine's button deck makes the selection from among the randomly generated guesses. Then, the player sees what the "survey says." The more popular the guess is, the larger the award. Players continue until they guess all the answers or get three strikes. Their awards are totaled, and they return to the game. |
COMPS Chip Collectors Puzzle at Four Aces By Chuck Greene, http://www.winneronline.com The "chip collectors puzzle" at Four Aces Casino is one of the most innovative comps I've seen in a while. Here's how it works. The first collectors chip is sent to you with your first check. The second through sixth collectors chips will be sent out with each additional payout returned to you. When the puzzle is completely solved, you will receive a $300 bonus on your eighth casino credit/deposit. Click to check it out. |
VEGAS New Hotel Coming to The Strip By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter MGM Grand Inc., fresh from a $6.4 billion acquisition of Mirage Resorts Inc., could begin construction on a new "over-the-top" Strip mega-resort in 18 months, said Chairman J. Terrence Lanni. Lanni told a news conference that MGM Grand is "engaging major architects who do over-the-top properties" to submit design plans for a resort on a 55-acre tract between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo resorts. The land came with MGM's acquisition of Mirage. |
SPORTS Betting for Couch Potatoes By Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter Sportingbet.com, the first British company to offer tax-free sports betting via the Internet, created another first when they took the first ever interactive bet via the television. The first bet was placed by Robert Pine, a 30 year old journalist from Streatham who had £10 to win on Malta against England for Saturday June 3 at odds of 25/1. He stands to win £250. Sportingbet.com's interactive television betting service went live June 1, 2000 at 12.00 hours and is available to over 1.6 million Telewest subscribers in the UK. |
HORSES Wednesday Night At Penn National By PD Mahalik, http://www.TurfnSport.com Mike Dempsey suggested one day not too long ago that the two of us get on line with some handicappers and go over a card while we were on line. He also suggested that we do Penn National since I am familiar with that track and it has a night card that would allow people from the handicapping community to participate after work. Mike had a chat room established on America On Line (AOL) and he e-mailed his regulars that are associated with The Winners' Circle. As I understand it, Mike's Winners' Circle is a loosely affiliated band of handicappers, owners, etc that get together and pool their resources on occasion to form a syndicate in order to bet big events like the Triple Crown races, but especially the Breeders' Cup card. I had no idea what to expect. Read more |
STRATEGY Gambling Tips from Our Readers By Steve Johnson, Gambling Newsletter Last week I asked our friendly readers to send in their best gambling tips. To add a little incentive I offered a free two-night hotel package to the person who, in my humble judgment, submitted the best tip. So here's a sampling of the tips we received, with my pick for "best tip" at the bottom. Many thanks to all who took the time to send an email. We received some great tips and will publish more next week. "Dont get overly greedy when you are on that winning streak - by all means play on BUT if you've doubled your original stake already, cash in your original stake, that way you still have your winnings to "harvest the streak" and if the streak goes bust you haven't lost any REAL money." - C "I did not invent this tip. It's one of the fundamentals that I cite all the time to my gaming friends and acquaintances, and it is this: Don't sit down to play any casino game unless you understand the rules and the correct playing strategy. I am amazed at the number of people who will, for example, sit down at a $5 blackjack table, plop a green $25 chip on the circle in front of them, and ask the dealer, 'How do we play this game?'" - GP "Every time you hit blackjack put the extra payout in a separate pocket. At the end of the session/day you will have a small kitty of money to buy a golf shirt, massage, etc. Most of the time I leave the casino with at least a shirt or jacket (even if I am down). I know this sounds wacky, but there is some comfortable & happy psychology knowing that I used their money to get the item I left with." - DR "Don't go to Las Vegas to make money. Go to enjoy yourself. Gamble sensibly, eat a bit too much, and take comfortable walking shoes." - BL "For those nickel and quarter slot players always take quart or gallon size freezer bags, doubled with you when you play. They fit so conveniently in the slot tray to catch that "falling money". Then transfer to buckets to collect. They are easy to fold and carry in purse or back pocket and make winning so much more convenient!" - DB And the free two-night hotel package goes to... "Before playing in a casino, always join the players club first and always use your card whether you are playing slots, video poker, or table games. Too many people don't bother to follow this most basic rule, but it's the only way to qualify for complimentary meals, rooms, shows, cashback, and other perks offered by the casino. Heeding this advice can turn a net loss into a net win or at least lower the overall cost of a trip to the casino." - AS |
