TOP NEWS Barona Casino Goes Coinless The face of slot machine gaming is about to change. San Diego's Barona Casino will soon be the first casino in the world to introduce fully integrated "coinless" slot machines. To begin play on the new machines, people simply insert cash or a voucher into the machine. When cashing out, players receive a printed voucher that can be used in any machine throughout the casino floor. "Coinless slots is where gaming is going," said Anthony Curtis, publisher of the Las Vegas Advisor, an industry newsletter and web site. "People want a cleaner and more convenient experience." |
POKER Paradise Poker's 7 Card Stud By Max Drayman, http://www.winneronline.com As part of my continuing quest to find the ultimate Poker site I stopped by Paradise Poker to see what they had to offer. Paradise pretty much delivers the goods. Their download/sign-up/sign-on process is straightforward. It may take a bit to determine where you create your play name. Save yourself the trouble and go to "Log in..." on the Lobby menu. You'll be up and playing in a few minutes. So far, so good. Read the rest of Max's review |

ONLINE Gaming Club Serves Up CashSplash By Chuck Greene, http://www.winneronline.com I paid my taxes not long ago and my bank account's a little dry. So I was more than happy to jump at the chance of 25 bucks free for gambling at The Gaming Club. Hey, if the cards fall right I should walk away with 500 bucks with no risk. Am I right? The Gaming Club uses MicroGaming software. As mentioned in previous reviews, MicroGaming's casino games (downloadable by the way) aren't the snazziest but they're okay. And The Gaming Club is part of MicroGaming's CashSplash progressive slot machine network. In fact, The Gaming Club recently paid out the biggest online progressive jackpot ever: $136,774.14. COMPS Comps at the Stardust Letter from B.T. in Texas Dear Steve: My wife and I spend half of each year in our home in the mountains 40 miles north of Las Vegas. The strip is just 50 minutes away, and while in the mountains we can live with the wild horses. It's the best of both worlds. Last month we were playing video poker at the Stardust.... While the Stardust doesn't have any full-pay video poker machines (that I've been able to find) they are VERY generous with free rooms and food. You can expect about four offers a year if you generate about 100 points per visit ($3,000.00 or less cash in). These offers are in addition to your earned cash-back points. They do have 50c 9/6 Jacks or Better, which becomes full-pay during their double point periods. (It's nearly full-pay with their normal cash-back schedule). Plus, 9/6 is a good game to play to avoid the wild ride of Double Bonus. So, tell your readers to JOIN THE SLOT CLUBS. You never know which ones will reward you for modest play (Fremont, Stardust and Caesars Palace are generous). I suggest that new visitors to Las Vegas join every club they visit and play just enough to put a few points on their card. Most cards are also good at blackjack and other table games. Then, wait and see who responds. Don't expect much from the new casinos. It's the older ones who must now become aggressive in maintaining high occupancy rates. |
HORSES Day in a Life of a Handicapper By P.D. Mahalik, TurfnSport Last time I started out defending myself as to why I use four horses on my short list after I handicap a race (the answer is to protect against scratches) and I ended up doing a Handicapping 101 course, and since that was well received, I thought I would continue in the same vein. When I first started as a public handicapper, I would look around to see what other handicappers were doing, and I found a lot of them passing on races. Then I did something really stupid, I let it be known that I would never pass on a race. I pass as a bettor all the time, but never as a writer. I also contacted a few handicappers and chided them for passing on races. If a client pays good money to read what you have to say about a card, then each race should have the results of the handicapper's analysis, and if there is no analysis, I believe the customer is getting the short end of the stick. A Note From the Editor
Last week I noted the lack of craps games in Canada due to an archaic law prohibiting dice games in Canada. I received a couple of emails reminding me that craps is now available in Windsor, Canada. So let me clarify the current dice situation in Canada. On March 15, 1999 the federal government removed the prohibition on dice games in Canada through the proclamation of an amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada. The prohibition on dice games dates to the 1380's when England's King Richard II outlawed dice games for fear that his archers were spending more time playing backgammon than practicing archery. Canada adopted English criminal law as the basis of its legal system in 1892. England legalized dice games in 1960. So for now dice games are still hard to find in Canada but we should expect them to be more common in future. Your editor, Steve Johnson, . See you next week! |
