Three Tenors Perform at Mandalay Bay

On March 2, 1999, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas opened its doors to the public. On April 22, 2000, the resort celebrates its one-year anniversary with a very special performance by the legendary Three Tenors. This intimate performance marks the Three Tenors only 2000 West Coast appearance as well as their first-ever performance in Nevada.

At only 10,700 seats, the anniversary concert earns the distinction as the Tenors' smallest public performance ever. The Mandalay Bay Events Center, inaugurated last year with a performance by Luciano Pavarotti, has also been the site of blockbuster concerts including Ricky Martin, The Eagles and Bette Midler.

New Aladdin Opens August 17
By Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

After 22 years, the legendary Aladdin casino was imploded on April 27, 1998. Soon a new Aladdin will take its place, bigger and better than ever. Opening August 17, 2000, the Aladdin will feature the city's largest collection of shops, restaurants, sights and entertainment. Inspired by the mystical tales of the 1,001 Arabian Nights, the multi-level casino will feature a towering 50-foot golden lamp with a dramatic sculpture of giant, winged horses gracing the entrance to the sports book facility.

The Aladdin's shopping complex, called the Desert Passage, will house more than 130 of the world's most extraordinary shops. Visitors will follow ancient trade routes stretching from the coast of Spain across Northern Africa on to the Arabian Sea. Along the way, they'll be able to browse in intriguing marketplaces like the Lost City, which is tucked into a towering mountainside, or enjoy street performances in lively gathering places like the North African Harbor.

On top of that, the Aladdin will offer more dining options than any other resort in Las Vegas -- 21 great restaurants.

Blackjack Myths
By Ralph "The Silver Fox" Stricker, http://www.silverfoxbj.com

Myth #1: The object of the game is to get to a total of 21, or as close as possible, and not exceeding 21.
Fact: The object of the game is to win. The best strategy many times is to stand, even if you do not have a total close to 21.

Myth #2: Third base is more favorable than the other seats.
Fact: Third base is no more favorable than any other seat, except in a single deck game where you can see more cards before your play.

Myth #3: You can't count more than two decks.
Fact: People are intimidated by multiple deck blackjack (4 or more decks). There is no difference in keeping a running count in multiple deck than there is in single or double deck.

Myth #4: Bad players cause us to lose.
Fact: Some people play a little bad, some very bad and some absolutely terrible. It doesn't make any difference since they have no effect on my winning or losing in the long term.

Myth #5: Always take Insurance if you have a Blackjack.
Fact: Insurance is the biggest "sucker bet" in blackjack. The casinos love people who take insurance.

Choosing a Bookmaker - Part 2
By Carl-William Tovås, http://www.gamblersdomain.com

Two weeks ago we looked at the issue of credibility and how it factors in when choosing a bookmaker. Now let's look at a few betting considerations.

First, what is the bookmaker's average deduction (tax)? A normal tax is 10-20%. The more experienced the bookmaker, the lower the tax they can work with. The tax can be estimated as follows, using Manchester United-Arsenal as an example. Say the bookmaker offers the odds, 2.00-2.00-3.00. If you bet so that you get the same amount back whatever outcome of the game you will be able to calculate the tax. In the match above, let's say we bet $300 on Manchester, $300 on a draw, and $200 on Arsenal to win. Whatever the outcome we will get $600 back. However we have made a total bet of $800 meaning we lost $200 on a $800 bet. 200/800 is 25%. This is the average deduction, or tax as we call it. All company's tax rates are presented on gamblersdomain.com.

Next, determine whether you can bet singles or are forced to bet doubles or trebles. If you can't bet on singles the tax is higher. If they have 10% tax and you have to bet doubles you will get only 81% back instead of 90%. This is because you have to multiply the average revenues. 0.90 * 0.90 = 0.81.

Finally, look for how much they let you win. A low win limit is not good.

In summary, the bookmaker you choose should:

  • Have 10 to 12% tax
  • Accept singles
  • Have a win limit of at least $10,000 per bet
