STRATEGY Playing Casino War Online by Michael Shackleford, The Wizard of Odds There are only two software providers that offer the game of Casino War that I know of: Starnet and Real Time Gaming. Real Time Gaming calls the game "War" and Starnet calls it "Battle Royale." It isn't often that Starnet offers the best rules for any game but Casino War is a noteworthy exception. For those those not familiar with the game the rules are simple. The player and dealer each get one card, the higher one wins. Read the full article at WINNERonline. |

CALIFORNIA Traffic Jam Jackpot Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter A Californian businessman who got stuck in a traffic jam by the Fantasy Springs Casino near Palm Springs, California won the casino's first ever Wheel of FortuneDollars MegaJackpot of a half million dollars on February 16. The lucky winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, became frustrated by gridlock from the nearby Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament so he decided to nip into the casino for a few minutes of slots. He played the Wheel of Fortune game just inside the entrance and accumulated $318 in winnings within 20 minutes of play. At that point, he was about to walk away from the game but decided on one last play. With his final push of the button, he won a MegaJackpot worth $585,655. Because this was the first time the anonymous winner had ever struck it rich, he thought something must have gone wrong when the buzzer rang and the neon light began to flash. The surprised and happy winner plans to pay off some outstanding debts and take a trip. |

ROULETTE Single-Zero European Roulette Chuck Greene, WINNERonline Kiwi Casino is lowering their house odds with the release of single-zero European Roulette. The new game debuts February 23. European Roulette is a favorite among casino patrons, and will offer Kiwi players better odds than its American counterpart due to its use of only one zero. "Casino patrons know that one less zero means a lower hold for the house," says Kiwi Casino manager Paul Russell. "No game is requested more often than European Roulette." RENO Casino Waitresses Protest Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter A group of cocktail waitresses demonstrated outside of Harrah's Reno last Friday to protest Nevada casinos' dress codes. The protest was provoked in part by the firing of Harrah's bartender Darlene Jespersen in August 2000 for refusing to wear makeup. The waitresses' union also wanted to protest casino dress guidelines which require women to wear high heels and makeup, have styled hair and an "overall appealing appearance". At Harrah's, dress code requirements include lip color and makeup applied neatly in complementary colors; shoes with a minimum 1-inch heel; and hair that's teased, curled or styled. Workers also must be "well-groomed, appealing to the eye, be firm and body toned." Activists with the Nevada Alliance for Workers' Rights compared the casino guidelines to those of the state's legalized brothels, saying that the brothels were less strict. Owner of a nearby brothel Dennis Hof, who calls himself America's Pimpmaster General said, "I don't sell anything else but sex - and yet I'm not concerned about makeup. Makeup is optional, and hair must be clean. Jeans are not allowed, nor are bare feet or house slippers. Everything else goes. " Jespersen, who'd worked for Harrah's for 20 cosmetic free years before being fired commented, "I'm hoping Harrah's will take notice and realize how much they exploit women. The Nevada Equal Rights Commission is still investigating her complaint. |

TRIP REPORT Treasure Island, Las Vegas We just returned from a four day stay at the Treasure Island in Las Vegas and it was overall a very good experience. Check-in seemed to take a little longer, but I think that was because the desk clerks made every effort to find the room that each customer wanted. In our case, we wanted two adjoining rooms with a view of the pirate ships and we got that. The room was beautiful, and the view of the pirate's bay was great. Room service was also prompt and very good. One morning when I had left a wakeup call, but had unknowingly left the phone off the hook, they sent someone up to knock on the door to the sure we were up. My eight year old grandson who was with us enjoyed the gameroom very much. We ate in all the restaurants except the buffet, and they were all good. Of course, we went to see Mystère and it was as wonderful as ever - this is my third time seeing it. My grandson loves it! They also had a much better selection of slots then the last time we were there. We enjoyed stay there and hope to return.- G. Mossberger Send your trip reports to .
