STRATEGY
Doubling Down
by Mark Pilarski, Deal Me In

Dear Mark,

I have been noticing many people doubling on hard 12's against dealer's 7, 8, 9, and 10. Is this a good bet? All we have here in Washington is six-deck games. Last night I saw a person who doubled 6 times and won. Tom H.

Note and admire, Tom, the Great Pyramid of Gambling: Sharks at the top, then the rounders, followed by the minnows, and finally those bottom fish, the same ones Phineas T. Barnum said were born every minute. Those that double down on hard 12's = certified SUCKERS. Nowhere in any publication on blackjack, will you see it recommended that you double on hard 12's, against any up-card, anywhere, anytime.

Live Fish Racing
Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

Starting in April 2024, William Hill will offer goldfish racing live on the internet via streaming video. There will be two races of six fish every day. Six different colored fish line up at one end of an aquarium behind a barrier and are released to swim freely. The first fish under the bridge at the other end of the tank is the winner. Each fish will start the racing season with 5-1 odds. As the season progresses, a form guide will be established and the odds will vary.

LAS VEGAS
Desert Winds Tear Up Strip
Melanie Banks, Gambling Newsletter

High winds roared into Las Vegas from the desert earlier this week causing damage to signs and buildings along the Strip. The winds also toppled power lines and knocked over a construction crane at Caesar's Palace. The crane collapsed into the hotel and took out chunks of the wall. Police closed The Strip from the Tropicana to the Flamingo and cautioned people to stay inside. No people were injured but several hotel marquees, including those of Bally's, Monte Carlo and the Mirage were damaged.

Bingo Millionaire
Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsleter

An unemployed former Russian factory worker, Nadezhda Mukhamyetzianova, from the Urals town of Ufa, has won a million dollars in the Russian Bingo Show lottery. A million dollars is an astronomical amount for Russia, where the majority of people get an average wage of $50 a month.

Mukhamyetzianova has been unemployed for years. When asked at a news conference what she intended to do with her winnings, she said, "I've worked in a factory all my life - we were building Communism." One journalist joked, "You're one of the rich now. You could buy the whole factory and fire the boss."

Save Casino Hopping for Trips to Vegas
Mark Balestra, eGamingWire

Variety is the spice of life, but when it comes to gambling on the Internet, it can also be the kiss of death.

The greatest example of bringing variety into your gambling experience is casino hopping up and down the Las Vegas Strip. In one day, you can gamble in Paris, Monte Carlo, New York City and Venice; you can pop in and out of a castle, a pirate ship and a pyramid; you can visit a beach, a rainforest and an active volcano. The many surroundings accessible via a quick cab ride are a big reason why the Strip is so darn exciting.

But here's the thing with Internet gambling: Whether you're in an office cubicle, a cold room in the basement or the den, your surroundings will always remain the same no matter how many different sites you visit. The only reasons to switch from site to site are if you're unhappy with the service at one site, you find a site with better odds or you want to play games or make wagers that aren't available at the site(s) where you're currently a registered player.

DETROIT
Craps Cheat Caught
Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter

Craps player Brent Morris is being held on $1 million bail in Detroit after being accused of cheating the Greektown Casino out of more than $10,000. Prosecutors claim the casino's surveillance tapes clearly show Morris had been post-posting, placing bets after the dice had stopped. The Michigan State Police, who investigate all casino crimes, have been successful in most of the cases they bring to trial and say most defendents plead guilty for lesser sentences. Morris' lawyer asked the judge at the preliminary hearing to lower the bail because he said his client is being made an example of.

TRIP REPORT
Beau Rivage, Biloxi, Mississippi

Just wanted to tell you about our Christmas trip to the new 1100 room Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. The lobby is beautiful and has a shopping area. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Rates were quoted at $119.00 per night, but we got a better (much better) deal by using Travelocity.com.

Some of the restaurants were overpriced, but we were on vacation. I liked the Coffee Bean where you could get a cup of coffee in the morning and free refills all day as long as I brought back an empty cup. Not a bad deal!

As for gaming, our son got us hooked on the new video touchscreen machines. My personal favorite was the Addams Family and the Little Green Men. After you hit 1000 credits you can request immediate payout in cash. The casino was large and the aisles were roomy, not like some cramped riverboats.

All in all, for the price we paid, this was one of the classiest hotels outside of Las Vegas that we have ever stayed in. Next time when we go in the summer we will try the fishing and the pool. - G. Anderson Fort Worth, Texas

Send your trip reports to . If we publish your report you'll receive a certificate for 2 nights free accommodation redeemable at a number of U.S. destinations. Some blackout periods and other restrictions apply, but it's free!
