ONLINE Net Gambling on 60 Minutes Chuck Greene, WINNERonline Last Sunday night CBS' 60 Minutes featured a segment on Internet gambling, focusing on the legal battles of Jay Cohen, founder of World Sports Exchange (WSEX.com), an online sportsbook. The segment, hosted by Morley Safer, portrayed World Sports Exchange as a legitimate offshore business run by former New York stock traders who find themselves at odds with outdated US law. Two years ago Cohen and his business partners at WSEX, Haden Ware and Steve Schillinger, were charged by the US government with taking sports wagers by phone and over the Internet, in violation of the Wire Act. Cohen returned to the US to stand trial and was convicted by a New York jury. He was fined $5,000 and sentenced to 21 months in prison. Read the full report at WINNERonline. |
BLACKJACK Winning at CyberBlackjack by Mark Balestra It's one of many common questions on the minds of newcomers to online casino gambling: Are the blackjack hands dealt from a shoe? In the case of every software package to be run through third-party testing, the answer is yes. And the next logical question is, "Wouldn't that make it extremely easy to count cards?" Those who know the ins and outs of gambling understand that successful card counting in blackjack is one of the few ways to gain an edge on the casino. Because most casinos use multiple decks (typically as many as six), only those who are extremely skilled at counting cards can achieve this. That makes Internet blackjack a very attractive alternative because it's a breeze counting cards when you can write down every card that is turned--something that's prohibited at terrestrial casinos for obvious reasons--and clean house, right? ROULETTE Roulette Cheat Imprisoned Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter Derrick St. John Bethea was sentenced January 5 to a year and a half in prison for cheating in roulette at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City two years ago. He also faces prosecution on two other charges that allege he cheated at the Showboat Casino-Hotel and Bally's Park Place last summer. It's alleged that he cheated by "post-posting", placing bets only when it was obvious where the ball would stop. Typically, the swindler and an accomplice work together. As the wheel slows, the accomplice distracts the dealer and the cheat slips in chips on the winning number. |
QUEBEC Video Lottery Protest Jerry Florici, Gambling Newsletter Anti gambling lobbyist Maurice Jean of St.-Fabien-Sur-Mer, Quebec, has been on a hunger strike for 28 days as a protest against government controlled video lottery terminals. He wants the Canadian government to take more responsibility for the problems which Jean says are directly linked to the terminals. According to the Quebec coroner's office, 11 suicides last year were linked to gambling problems. Eventually, Jean wants to launch a class action suit against the government to stop it from putting the terminals in bars, restaurants and other public places and to force it to provide help for compulsive gamblers. So far, no government official has contacted Jean. |
TRIP REPORT Casino Road Trip For my vacation this year I decided to do a road trip around Lake Huron with the intention of doing a little bit of hiking, a little bit of gambling and a lot of R and R. I began in Toronto, which doesn't have a casino unless you count racetrack and slots at Woodbine, to Casino Rama outside of Orillia. I played an hour of Let It Ride and a half hour of slots but there wasn't anything new. Next I had a brief visit to Sudbury Downs before hitting the Trans Canada Highway for Sault Ste Marie. The charity casino in the Sault is small, friendly and slot selection isn't too bad considering the location, but because of some arcane Ontario law, video poker is not allowed. The next day I crossed the border to arrive at Kewadin Casino Hotel in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. I liked the Kewadin so much I extended my stay for 2 more nights. Compared to Ontario, there was a good selection of slots I either hadn't played at all, or since my last visit to the US. During the next couple of days I also checked out Bay Mills Casino and Keewadin Manistique on day trips. My next stop was Keewadin Hessel where I enjoyed playing Elvis, especially since he sang his greatest hits for me when I got the top bonus of 1000 coins. St Ignace was enjoyable enough to warrant 3 night stay. Since there wasn't a hotel on site, I stayed at a Best Western that was right on the lake and offered daily coupons for the casino that included buy $20 get $30 coupons, as well as shuttle service. Next stop Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt.Pleasant, the biggest disappointment of the trip. I wasn't too impressed with their slot selection or video poker schedules. After Soaring Eagle it was time to head back to Canada with a visit to the Sarnia casino and the Sarnia racetrack and slots., After a very brief stop at the London racetrack and slots, it was back down the 401 to Toronto and the end of a very enjoyable, if not profitable, vacation. - R.Dott Send your trip reports to . If we publish your report you'll receive a certificate for 2 nights free accommodation redeemable at a number of U.S. destinations. Some blackout periods and other restrictions apply, but it's free! |
